Everything is connected! I bought a big bag of candy for our grad students and about 1/8 of the bag were Tootsie Pops! Love that commercial and they are still popular.

When I was a kid, there was a local TV show for children, “Sheriff John.” Every day, they sang a birthday song and had a birthday prize winner, selected from postcards send in by parents. A fake bird (stuffed animal? Puppet?) would drop down on a visible string with a card in its mouth. The day’s winner was on the card. When I was five, I won, which was very exciting. I was the envy of the neighborhood kids. Soon after I received the prizes: a large cardboard tootsie roll filled with that ‘third tier’ candy, including many real tootsie rolls. And a board game. I thought I had won lottery. The candy was soon gone. (There were five of us kids.)

So fun! I don’t remember Sheriff John but that feeling of the person on the TV reaching out through the screen to you is real. I remember that feeling from Romper Room. Yay for your parents sending in a postcard on your behalf and you actually winning!
